Antarctica - ’Furious Fifties’

JPEGDr Jean-Louis Etienne, Polar explorer, North Pole first solo on skis in 1986, co-leader of the International TransAntarctica expédition 1989-90 explorer, is designer and captain of the schooner now named “Tara”. As a doctor specialising in sports biology and nutrition, Jean-Louis Etienne has taken part in numerous expeditions to the Himalayas, Greenland and Patagonia. In advance of his next expedition, a year of exploration on the Southern Ocean aboard the ‘PolarPod’ a manned oceanographic platform designed to drift around Antarctica in the infamous ‘furious fifties’ winds, Dr Etienne will share stories of his past adventures and details of his upcoming trip.

The presentation introduced by the Ambassador of France to Ireland will be followed by a round table including Claire Le Calvez, Concordia Station Technical & Logistical Manager in Antarctica, Chris Bean, Director, UCD Earth Institute, Eimear Carlin, 2041 Antarctic Youth Ambassador, Charlotte O’Kelly, CEO, Techworks Marine, Franck McGovern, Head of Climate Change Research & Science, EPA
During the evening “Concordia, Austral Sciences” a film produced by CNRS will be screened in partnership with CNRS Images
