President Hollande hails Nobel award for chemical weapons body
Nobel Peace Prize for the international Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons – Statement by M. François Hollande, President of the Republic
Paris, 11 October 2013
I congratulate the international Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) – tasked with enforcing the international Chemical Weapons Convention, signed in Paris in 1993 –, which has just been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
I hope this distinction will strengthen it in its mission to eliminate chemical weapons worldwide completely and definitively. These weapons of terror were used once again by the Syrian regime against civilians on 21 August 2013: it must never be possible for such acts of barbarism to recur.
France fully supports the OPCW in its crucial mission of destroying the Syrian arsenal in the framework of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2118 (2013). It will lend its full support to the OPCW’s action and to promoting international cooperation on the peaceful use of chemistry./.
