Visit of Genzyme, French pharmaceutical company
H.E. the French Ambassador to Ireland Jean-Pierre Thebault was in Waterford on April 29 for a series of company visits.
On the list was Genzyme (Sanofi group), a pharmaceutical company specialized in curing rare hereditary problems, kidney diseases, cancer, transplantation and immunity-related diseases.
Genzyme Ireland set-up its production plant in Waterford and employs over 480 staff on a 14.000m² site. The company is planning to launch the production of Lantus, an insulin glargine-based antidiabetes medicine, in Waterford in 2016.
Since 2001, Genzyme invested nezrly 450 million euros in this plant whose products are destined for the North-America market. The Waterford plant, which specializes in production techniques, packaging dry-form medicine and the filling of individual pouches also produces Renagel, a medicine used against renal failure and injectable products prescribed for growth pathology treatment.
