Meet Jean-Michel Aguirre, former French international
Born in Tostat, Jean-Michel Aguirre is a former French rugby union player. His club was the Stade Bagnérais. He also coached the Paloise team and the Italian club Treviso for two years. Between 1971 and 1980 he was selected to play for the French national XV 39 times. He earned his first national cap in 1971 against Australia at Colombes.

Entente cordiale? Celebrating A Century of Rugby Rivalry

Panellists and former rugby internationals Jean-Michel Aguirre, Peter Clohessy, Mick Galway and Donal Spring will be put through their paces in a round table chaired by Dr Philip Dine, Head of the French Department in NUI Galway and a renowned authority on French rugby. Prior to this, Dr Dine will also give a talk on the theme of ‘La vie en Rose’: Reinventing French rugby in the professional era.

The first competitive rugby match between Ireland and France took place in 1909, with the home team winning comfortably. However, since then the French have won far more encounters than they have lost against Ireland. In more recent times, the Heineken Cup has also provided some classic encounters between Irish and French clubs, thus heightening an already intense rivalry.

A raffle for 3 pairs of Munster tickets will take place on the night, with proceeds going to the Shane Geoghegan fund.
